Winchelsey Rise

The refurbishment and extension of a house in Croydon takes the owner's heritage and cultural identity as its starting point, and lets it surface, quietly and throughout, in the way the house is detailed and made.

Against a calm, largely white interior, that cultural heritage is drawn out in finely pierced geometric screens, an arched alcove set with built-in seating, richly patterned floors and hanging lanterns. Pattern and filtered light play across otherwise simple, contemporary rooms, so that the references feel woven into the architecture rather than applied to it.

Spanning some 400m², this full refurbishment, extension and replanning of an existing family home was delivered under Permitted Development rights, taken from initial brief through to completion.
